YEREVAN, Armenia – On September 15, 2015, about 50 American University of Armenia (AUA) students and other guests attended an information session promoting International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The AUA College of Science and Engineering, in cooperation with the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment, hosted the information session. Guest speakers included Ms. Liana Ghahramanyan, Head of the National Ozone Unit at Armenia’s Ministry of Nature Protection, and Ms. Anne Fenner, Information Manager at the UN Environment Programme, who joined the session online from Paris, France.

“Since 2006, Armenia has developed a robust legislative framework to control ozone depleting substances in the country, which has allowed the total phase-out of CFCs by January 1st, 2010. Now, the country is dealing with the latest challenge of phasing-out HCFC’s, which deplete the stratospheric ozone but to a much lesser extent than CFCs,” says Ms. Ghahramanyan.

The speakers discussed ozone-layer depletion, the difference between ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases, the international response and Armenia’s contribution to the restoration of the ozone layer, and the results gained through joint effort 30 years after the signing of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.

The AUA Acopian Center for the Environment (AUA ACE) is a research center of the American University of Armenia. AUA ACE promotes the protection and restoration of the natural environment through research, education, and community outreach.
